Heritage Happenings

      Volume 20, Issue 6
      February, 2012

Notes from the Co-First Vice Presidents
Barbara Fowler (dbfowler@att.net), Elaine Stein (eastein76@yahoo.com)

TECHNIQUES--TECHNIQUES--TECHNIQUES!!!

Taking an intricately pieced block and simplifying it by using machine/hand appliqué technique. "Pieced appliqué eliminates inset points and curves from even the most complicated blocks. Quilts and blocks you may never have considered are now not only possible but a breeze." Penny Haren, pennyharen.com, will be guiding you through-----But if you don't sign up for the Fri., March 9, workshop you won't learn !! The sign up form is in this newsletter so send it in as soon as possible. Penny needs a count so she can provide as many kits as needed. When your registration form is received you will receive a supply list. There will be a $10 kit fee, paid to Penny Haren at the workshop. So you won't need to buy fabric for this workshop.

There have been several changes in our schedule since the brochure was printed, so double check. The Penny Haren workshop is not Back to Basics but Perfect Points & Curves. The Feb. 9 program will be Mary Siriani's Trunk Show and the May 10 program will be Kay Nickols, kaynickols.com.

It was disappointing that Gretchen Tatge, owner of Quilt'n Friends, was ill and unable to speak at the Jan. meeting. But thanks to Kathy Swantek and Diane LaDue for contacting Ruth Mc McCormick, RUTHMCCORMICK.COM, to fill in with her program on T-Shirt Quilts. Now you can "whip" one up for your kids or grandkids for graduation, this year or the next or the next-----.

Please check the web sites for Penny Haren and Kay Nickols so you will be familiar with their styles and classes.

President’s Prospective
Diane Ladue (dladue@comcast.net)

This year February is an extra special month for GLHQ. We have our own Mary Sirianni presenting a trunk show at guild on the 9th, followed by Mystery Quilt Day on the 11th, and last but not least our 20th Anniversary Quilt Show the 24th and 25th. How much fun it that? So clear your calendars, get plenty of rest, take a deep breath; we are going to have so much fun.

“Silver Linings”, You Just Have To Look For Them

Bad things happen, it’s just a fact of life. But isn’t it amazing how there’s almost always a silver lining to be found afterwards. Like when that pipe burst in my upstairs bathroom. I didn’t want to remodel half my house, but it sure will be lovely when it’s finally finished.

I have to admit there was some major panic setting in when we got the call the morning of our January meeting and learned that our speaker was ill. Gretchen Tatge, owner of Quilt n Friends, has supported our guild from day one, and I was really looking forward to her program. What would we do on such short notice? Fortunately, our guild is full of very clever members, and it only took a couple calls to work out our dilemma. Kathy Swanteck suggested Ruth McCormick. She was home, and even though she had a migraine she agreed to come. There was one little problem; she needed a computer projector for her presentation. We remembered that Aniko Feher used one for her presentation. One more phone call and Aniko generously agreed to let us use it. It was approximately one hour from when the problem arose until it was resolved. Amazing. The silver lining – a fabulous program on making t-shirt quilts. Ruth had so many ideas, tips, and examples that members now have all the tools we need to make fabulous quilts from all the t-shirts we’ve been collecting.

How many times have you run out of that must have fabric while working on a quilt and had to make a substitution that turns out to be just what that quilt needed to make it shine? The silver lining.

You planned a fabulous tropical vacation and your husband gets sick. The silver lining? You get to stay home and quilt. Okay, maybe that one doesn’t qualify but you get what I mean. Next time something doesn’t quite go the way you want it to, keep your eyes wide open, there’s bound to be a silver lining just waiting to happen.

Baby Quilt Sale for the February GLHQ Show at Canterbury
Jean Usner (jeanusner@gmail.com)

We now have over 20 quilts for the sale, but could use more. Please consider making a quilt to bring to the February meeting – or even to Mystery Quilt Day. We are not selling these quilts as bargains, but for what they are worth in materials and time. If a quilt does not sell, the person who donated it will get it back and can decide to keep it, or donate it to the Charity Committee. Among others quilts, I have donated the quilt I bought (for $110) at Shipshewana in the mid 1990’s. Although I had been sewing for over 40 years, I did not believe I could make a quilt. That quilt is nice, but not of the quality we GLHQ members make. People love to have a quilt when a baby is born into their family. I believe this sale will be a success.

Charity
Karen Keller (karen@hyperwind.com) & the Charity Committee

Thank-you everyone for your generosity and for making our job so easy. We are very close to achieving our initial goals. The Royal Kids Camp quota of 96 quilts is in need of about 10 more quilts. The Oakland County Baby Shower goal of 25 Is in need of 12 more neutral baby quilts. Look for exciting news on our next charity project at the next meeting.

Our next charity sew day is March 22 at Nino Salvaggio's on Hall Road in Sterling Heights from nine to four. Everyone who attended the last event enjoyed the venue as well as the food. Hope to see you there.

Our next "charity quilt of the month" is a strip pieced scrappy called Row by Row. Look for patterns and kits.

We have several quilt tops that still need quilting. We are running low on fabric so if anyone would like to take a pattern home and make a kit this will earn you a ticket for our quilt drawing in June.

Haven
Karen Whitney (whitney_kirk@msn.com)

February Donation: Bath Towels and Valentine gifts (wrapped and labeled)

Over 450 diapers were donated in January plus other staples. Once again, thanks so much for your generosity. In addition to the February donations, HAVEN is looking for women's athletic socks. Also, if you have recently gotten a new cell phone, HAVEN is asking for donations to be used as a safe phone or to recycle to raise crucial funds for HAVEN services. You are making a difference in the lives of the 250 families now being supported by HAVEN.

Challenge
Christine Reeves (christinevreeves@gmail.com)

This year’s challenge is all about WARMING UP TO WOOL! We are asking members to make any project they like using wool material. I am sorry to say this means no knitting. The rules are simple you can make anything you would like and it must be at least 70% wool. Feel free to use both wool and cotton but the majority of the project needs to be wool. If you have any questions you can contact me at christinevreeves@gmail.com or call me at 248-255-2159. I look forward to seeing our talented members work.

Mystery Quilt Day
Jo Cassar (edjocass@comcast.net)

Mystery Quilt day is set for Saturday, February 11, 2012. It will be held at the Jewish Community Center again this year.

The theme for the day is "20 years of Friendship and Sharing". Please come and share a fun filled day with old "friends" and maybe make a few new ones. The day will have lots of opportunities to "share" whether it be ideas, good food or a laugh. This year we have tried to simplify you fabric prep. You are being asked to bring four yards of fabric in the medium dark to dark value. Two yards of batik and two yards of regular quilting fabric (washed please). So start your shopping....on line (connecting threads has a great sale on batiks), at your favorite quilt shop or in your stash. This must be brought in when you register. A supply list for other items will be given at the December and January meetings. If you need more information, please call Jo Cassar at 248 738 8155 (before 8pm please).

Well good "friends", I look forward to "sharing" the day with you.
