President’s Perspective

Diane Ladue (dladue@comcast.net)

Happy New Year!

2011 has come to a close, and it sure was a great year for GLHQ. We had so many wonderful programs and events. A great big “thank you” to Patti Kreh, Letty Abraham, Joyce Montante and the entire Holiday Boutique committee, great job. Also, Amy Rapoport and her committee did a fabulous job with the potluck. Let’s give a big round of applause to the entire membership for contributing to one of the best spreads we’ve ever had, delicious. What a great way to close out the year.

How exciting to be starting January with Gretchen Tatge, owner of Quilt’n Friends. She was our January speaker 20 years ago and is always lots of fun. Gretchen was a supporter of our guild even before we existed. How many of you learned that a new guild was coming while visiting her shop way back when? We’ll have to ask that very question at guild.

It’s A New Year

Don’t you just love January? The fun and excitement of the holidays are behind us and life is a little calmer. Time to put the ornaments away, get things organized and do some serious quilting. I need a few weeks without commitments just to clear my head and figure out priorities for the year. There’s no better time to just hole up in your quilting space and work on your own project, you know, the one you’ve been trying to find time for. A little “me time” is really important. You know what they say; you must take care of yourself first if you want to be strong enough to care for others. So, take some time now, get strong, because you know what? You’re sure going to need it next month, we’ve got a lot on our plates. Hope I see you Tuesday.

Holiday Boutique

Letty Abraham (lettya2003@yahoo.com), Joyce Montante (jhmjmm@comcast.net) and Patti Kreh (pskreh@gmail.com)

Hope everyone had a great time at the December Guild Meeting and enjoyed the Holiday Boutique FUNraiser. We collected over $1000. Thank you to those who created and donated the lovely items for the silent auction. Also, the volunteers that helped to make the event run so smoothly deserve a big “THANK YOU”. On behalf of Letty, Joyce and myself, we wish everyone a happy and pieceful New Year.

Haven

Karen Whitney (whitney_kirk@msn.com)

Donations for January: Large diapers and over size 2 pull ups AWESOME...AWESOME...AWESOME that's what our December HAVEN donation was! Over $1000 worth of gifts for families in need. Our grand total of ethnic Barbies was 52. Coats, hats, scarves and hand knit socks were gifts of warmth. Crockpot and iron were gifts that will warm the home. Games for gifts of fun and beauty products were our gifts of necessity. We had it all covered! A special thanks to PT Thompson who delivered all our gifts. We do make a difference; keep up the great effort.

Challenge

Christine Reeves (christinevreeves@gmail.com)

This year’s challenge is all about WARMING UP TO WOOL! We are asking members to make any project they like using wool material. I am sorry to say this means no knitting. The rules are simple you can make anything you would like and it must be at least 70% wool. Feel free to use both wool and cotton but the majority of the project needs to be wool. If you have any questions you can contact me at christinevreeves@gmail.com or call me at 248-255-2159. I look forward to seeing our talented members work.

Our Quilters Tea and Turning event scheduled for Sunday, January 22, 2012, promises to be a unique opportunity for the quilter in your family to

  • handle our museum's historic quilts
  • confer with other quilters and bring/show and tell your own historic quilt
  • meet antique quilt expert Beth Donaldson and hear a presentation on quilt history
  • enjoy a banquet style tea in the museum, and
  • have a chance at winning an extravagant door prize--a 58 X 67 quilt of vintage fabric made by museum volunteers.

Mystery Quilt Day
Jo Cassar (edjocass@comcast.net)

Mystery Quilt day is set for Saturday, February 11, 2012. It will be held at the Jewish Community Center again this year.

The theme for the day is "20 years of Friendship and Sharing". Please come and share a fun filled day with old "friends" and maybe make a few new ones. The day will have lots of opportunities to "share" whether it be ideas, good food or a laugh. This year we have tried to simplify you fabric prep. You are being asked to bring four yards of fabric in the medium dark to dark value. Two yards of batik and two yards of regular quilting fabric (washed please). So start your shopping....on line (connecting threads has a great sale on batiks), at your favorite quilt shop or in your stash. This must be brought in when you register. A supply list for other items will be given at the December and January meetings. If you need more information, please call Jo Cassar at 248 738 8155 (before 8pm please).

Well good "friends", I look forward to "sharing" the day with you.

HOW TO MAKE A HANGING SLEEVE
Cut a strip of fabric 9 inches by the width of your quilt minus 1 ½ inches. Turn each short end under ¼ inch twice and machine stitch. Sew the long edges together with a ¼ inch seam. Press the seam open.

Center the sleeve at the top of the quilt back with seam toward the quilt and one fold barely touching the sewn edge of the binding. Hand stitch the top and bottom long edges and the under layer of the ends, making sure the top layer is open to accommodate a hanging rod.

Quilt Show Entry Guidelines and Procedures:

1.All entry forms (one item per form) must be postmarked or received no later than Jan. 16, 2012. Please include color photograph of your item.
