President’s Prospective
Diane Ladue (dladue@comcast.net)

October was certainly a great month, starting with Aniko Feher’s wonderful lecture. She made me laugh and cry, and her quilts were amazing. Her workshop was great too. We’re sure to see some fabulous finished projects at Show & Tell this month.

We couldn’t have asked for better weather for the Studio Tour. I had a wonderful time as a presenter and everyone that came through seemed to be having a great time too. Kudos to Mary Jo, Sandra and the tour committee for organizing such a wonderful event.

November looks like another great month. We should get a good start on our charity goals at the Charity Sew Day followed by Two Men and a Trunk, which sounds like a lot of fun. Don’t forget, we’re meeting at Beautiful Savior Church on Adams Rd. See you there.

Deadlines, a Love-Hate Relationship

When assigned a task do you do it immediately or put it off until the last minute? I’ve heard there are people out there that actually get them done as soon as they’re assigned, and then go around living stress free lives. My husband calls them “forward thinkers”. He and one of my daughters are like that; I can’t relate. Me, I’m definitely someone who needs a deadline to get through life. How about you?

I used to fight it. I actually thought there was something wrong with me but recently decided to embrace it. I’m a little indecisive, and may also have a problem with perfectionism, which makes me over think things. Once you have a deadline looming it takes things out of your hands and you have to, “just do it”. No time to think. It’s totally freeing.

Next time you hear that you have a deadline don’t shudder or grumble, just smile and say, “Thanks I needed that” and then, just get it done.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Raffle Quilt Will Travel…

Looking for a few good gals to sit with and sell tickets for the raffle quilt. The Quilter's Garden Quilt Shop in Fenton is willing to let us hang our raffle quilt in their shop during their upcoming shop hop, if we will sit at a table with it and sell the tickets. The dates are: Friday, November 11th and Saturday, November 12th 9am to 7 pm. It is so sweet of the shop to let us do this. If you would be interested in helping out call Diana Ratzlaff at 248-634-4685. Thanks so much!

Notes from the Co-First Vice Presidents
Barbara Fowler (248-646-3658, dbfowler@att.net) & Elaine Stein (eastein76@yahoo.com)

Although Aniko Feher's workshop did not have as many participants as we had hoped, the workshop project was more than we had hoped. We will have the gals bring their projects, finished or not for Nov. show & tell so all can see the process & results.

TWO MEN & A TRUNK, NOV.10

Don't miss out on the November workshops! Each will teach a different technique so you can't help learning something new. The Friday workshop is paper piecing, a snow flake table runner/wall hanging. Saturday will be the Bargello method of piecing. Do not wait to hear the lecture before you sign up. Without greater participation, to cover the expense of paying the teacher and room rental, the workshops will have to be cancelled. It is necessary to have your application in by Nov. 9th. You can bring cash or check to the meeting but we need your reservation by Nov. 9th. Send your application, printed in the newsletter or can be printed from the GLHQ web site, to Barbara Fowler or Elaine Stein. (phone or email)

Please check John Putnam's web site: http://johnthequilter.smugmug.com/Quilting/ClassQuilts/2242065 hqj8R#116951257UaJ84 for Bargello examples.

The web site for Dan Burke: http://www.quiltingbytheriver.com/Worshops.html will show the snow flake pattern.

We will have the list of supplies needed for each workshop at the guild meeting Nov. 10.

ATTENTION !!!!! THE NOVEMBER LECTURE/MEETING IS AT BEAUTIFUL SAVIOR LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5631 N.ADAMS RD.,BLOOMFIELD HILLS-7 P.M. The workshops are at the Clawson United Methodist Church, N. Main, north of 14 Mile as usual.

Workshop Parking

At the First United Methodist Church in Clawson you may drop off your "stuff" at the curb but the parking area by the entrance is reserved for church personnel.

The lot adjacent is for visitors (quilters) and is usually available for the Saturday workshops. Friday workshop quilters may need to park across Broardacre Ave. in the public parking lot. Drive through the alley and the lot is behind the cleaners. But remember you may drop your "stuff" on the side walk by the church entrance being careful not to block access for cars.

Mystery Quilt Day
Jo Cassar (edjocass@comcast.net)

Mystery Quilt day is set for Saturday, February 11, 2012. It will be held at the Jewish Community Center again this year.

The theme for the day is "20 years of Friendship and Sharing". Please come and share a fun filled day with old "friends" and maybe make a few new ones. The day will have lots of opportunities to "share" whether it be ideas, good food or a laugh. This year we have tried to simplify you fabric prep. You are being asked to bring four yards of fabric in the medium dark to dark value. Two yards of batik and two yards of regular quilting fabric (washed please). So start your shopping....on line (connecting threads has a great sale on batiks), at your favorite quilt shop or in your stash. This must be brought in when you register. A supply list for other items will be given at the December and January meetings. If you need more information, please call Jo Cassar at 248 738 8155 (before 8pm please).

Well good "friends", I look forward to "sharing" the day with you.

HOW TO MAKE A HANGING SLEEVE
Cut a strip of fabric 9 inches by the width of your quilt minus 1 ½ inches. Turn each short end under ¼ inch twice and machine stitch. Sew the long edges together with a ¼ inch seam. Press the seam open.

Center the sleeve at the top of the quilt back with seam toward the quilt and one fold barely touching the sewn edge of the binding. Hand stitch the top and bottom long edges and the under layer of the ends, making sure the top layer is open to accommodate a hanging rod.

Quilt Show Entry Guidelines and Procedures:

1.All entry forms (one item per form) must be postmarked or received no later than Jan. 16, 2012. Please include color photograph of your item.
2. It is important that we receive all items that have been entered in the show because we plan the layout of the show and the program from the entry forms and photos. Please be realistic about what you can finish to avoid withdrawals.
3. GLHQG reserves the right to refuse entries that do not meet its requirements.
4. Items must be: clean, in good condition, made of fabric, contain 3 layers and be quilted.
5. Quilts must have a 4 inch sleeve (casing) stitched to the top of the quilt back.
6. Photography is allowed during the show.

A Request from Your Board
Shhhh…

We’re still having a problem with people having private conversations during our meetings. It’s hard to hear the speaker when someone near you is talking. This is not new, it’s been a problem since the guild began but how can we stop it? Giving the offenders a pleading look can work but if the person is in front of you why not try this, place your hand on the offenders shoulder and just rest it there for a couple seconds. Thanks for you help.
