Leaving a 15-year career in the apparel and textile industry (and a front seat to the rise of fast fashion), I was craving craftmanship, handmade, local and zero-waste where possible.
And then I found quilting, where my sewing and textile knowledge naturally led me to make quilts as art, as apparel, as functional decor; mixing vintage and upcycled textiles, turning scraps back into fabric.
And I realized my unique expertise and passion could be shared and, just maybe, inspire you to use repurposed and upcycled fabrics in your quilty projects.
My promise to you: I will never be perfect, but I will always infuse my authenticity, big heart and medium silliness in everything I do.
My great grandmother was a Jewish immigrant from Russia who worked as a seamstress in New York's garment district. She passed her skills on to my mother who taught me to sew when I was young. I honed those skills in college studying costume design and theater history and working in theater costume shops.
Post college I worked as a fashion writer and then moved into corporate apparel where I had the opportunity to travel the world researching trends and developing products for Levi's. But my dream was always to return to basics - to have my hands on the fabrics and to create my own designs, my art.
Lecture follows Radha's journey from the fashion world to the world of upcycled and denim quilts, from creative reuse centers to QuiltCon. Radha will join us via Zoom.
